Charlie Boyer and the Voyeurs-Things We Be

Nothing better to round off a Sunday night with some some chilled rock. Largely underrated Charlie Boyer and the Voyeurs are setting some cool hooks with a touch of TOY in their new single Things We Be. Easygoing indie seems to work well with this band and Things We Be proves that. It sounds like The Kooks with some scuzzy riffs and frankly, a much more awesome band playing. They suit you innocent little indie kids, but are also good fun for fans of the likes of Miles Kane. If you're looking for a fun, happy song for the old iPod, Charlie Boyer and the Voyeurs are the way forward.

Chrvches-Recover

This is pretty amazing. Glasgow rarely pulls a great talent from its city, as most don't make it very far in music. However, Chvrches show why they are in that minority that make them universally likable. The electropop group - formed in 2011 and made waves in 2012 - have rapidly grown and should be even better off after their new single Recover. Singer Lauren Mayberry sweetly serenades through the track "And if I recover/will you be my comfort" in her strong Glasgow twang. The synths are as perfect as the vocals, which sums up this pretty consistent song. Listen to Chvrches, it won't do you any harm.

Kendrick Lamar-Swimming Pools (Drank)

Off the back of his album Good Kid, m.A.A.d. City, hip-hop newbie Kendrick Lamar releases his new single Swimming Pools (Drank) this week. With his album receiving huge praise, the pressure of delivering great singles is an issue. However, Lamar is not phased by this. Swimming Pools is dark and artful and is some of Lamar's best work to date. The chorus is cool, the overall song is popular for a reason and Lamar is showing why he will be part of the new wave of hip-hop.

Peace-Follow Baby

The most exciting thing to come out of Birmingham in the 21st century finally released their debut album In Love last week and along with this they released their new single Follow Baby. So, with their pysch-rock wowing critics, Peace will be aiming to impress with their new single, as well as their new album. Follow Baby keeps the pop side of Peace, but also escapes to a grungy-sounding, guitar-screeching world which sounds like a trippy Cage the Elephant. It may not be the highlight of In Love, but it certainly shows why it deserved to be on one of the best albums of the year so far.

Sky Ferreira-Everything Is Embarrassing

Her tale of being co-operate and failing before ditching her bigwig major-label and becoming an indie popstar is remarkable. However, at the end of the day, just because you change, it does not mean that you are guaranteed success. Thankfully for pop sensation Sky Ferreira, she has managed to sound better than she did in her early electropop years. Her new single Everything Is Embarrassing possesses an eighties beat and is warped with moody vocals. You may think that this doesn't sound appealing, but it's cool. It's emotional. It's unique. She already has Tumblr and hipster bloggers drooling over her, will she do the same on the likes of YouTube or Spotify? If she keeps this up, then there's no doubt she'll be successful.

Azealia Banks-Yung Rapunxel

She has been dissing people all over the Twittersphere, frustrating people by not releasing her album and breaking the world record for the overuse of the world "cunt". So, you can imagine that a follow-up to last year's mega anthem 212 would be something so fussed about. The successor of this is her new single Yung Rapunxel which is certainly weird and wonderful. Although this hasn't got anything on 212, Banks continues her bratty persona as she spits through this at her usual lightning pace. She shrieks beneath a rave sound "Just let me pop my shit, let me hit that weed!" adding that fire to this track. It has flaws - the way Azealia's voice isn't distinct and the fact that so much is going on at the one time - but if you love a good banging tune with a bitchy rapper rolling words off her tongue as fast as a Bugatti, you'll love Yung Rapunxel.

ALBUM: Palma Violets-180

They were tipped with fame in 2013 last year and it is easy to see why London band Palma Violets have received such praise. A few weeks ago, their debut album 180 hit the stores and was viewed as a fun, but remarkable LP - and I agree with these views. They start the album with fan favourite and anthem of the album, Best of Friends. Frontmen Sam Fryers and Chili Jesson bawl their way through this anti-romance number as they scream through the chorus "I wanna be your best friend, I don't want you to be my girl" as they make such an awkward moment in someone's life seem so cheery. They continue this great form into their second song Step Up For the Cool Cats which is played perfectly on the organ by Peter Mayhew. This is very much like The Cure with it's gothic edge and hissing, which still oozes originality. All Of the Garden Birds is light and relaxing, before Rattlesnake Highway sends you on a road (pardon the pun) of good old fashioned rock and roll. However, delightfully-sounding track Chicken Dippers gives the band a proper rock side and sells the album with a killer riff, being one of the highlights of the album. Breakthrough single Last Of the Summer Wine then follows with its catchy hooks and Fryers' swooning voice bellowing "Over and over agaainn". Tom the Drum then follows up with even more hooks in this song, as it gleams something like The Clash. Brilliantly named track Johnny Bagga Donuts then makes you think of The Libertines with its undefined sound which is then followed by We Found Love which is just a rabble. Three Stars is the only weak part of the album as it fails to capture hearts the way a slow song usually would. But in Palma Violets fashion, they don't like to leave with disappointed fans, so final song 14 ends on a high note as it tells the tale of a wasted night out: "Oh fourteen oh fourteen/take me home". And yes, they sound just as drunk when recording this. Although you may say that their first album is a little immature; lacking seriousness and doesn't point in a certain musical direction, does that make it poor? The fact that they are exciting and rowdy and puts you in mind of some of our best bands that have been produced in this country, it's certainly lived up to its hype as a great album.

Best Tracks: Best of Friends, Chicken Dippers, Tom the Drum

Rating: 9/10

Frank Ocean feat. Earl Sweatshirt-Super Rich Kids

Just wow. Hip-hop star and member of rap collective Odd Future, Frank Ocean really knows how to make a hit. His soothing voice lets no one down on his new single Super Rich Kids. A keyboard background is beefed up by one of the best voices in hip-hop as he takes a dig at teenagers living in excessive wealth who don't value items sentimentally "New car, new girl/new ice, new glass". Ocean is quite clearly slating those who are gifted new items all the time, rather than working hard for it. Fellow OF member Earl Sweatshirt adds some chilled rap to the equation and with this and Ocean's incredible falsettos, it's hard not to love this song. If you are a shower singer, this is definitely one for you. And yes, I think this may be my first perfect song that I have reviewed...

The Vaccines-Bad Mood

As much as some will argue that indie rockers The Vaccines delivered only a slightly altered second album and that it had an expiration date, there were some absolute hits off of their album Come of Age. Heavy tune Bad Mood is one of the best off of that album. The lyrics are straightforward and, well, moody from Justin Young as he groans through this track which is blessed with some brilliant riffs from guitarist Freddie Cowan, especially at the chorus where the song rattles through. The song is all high tempo and fast throughout which might not be everyone's cup of tea, but for fans, it's great to see live. Nice to see another anthem from the London band.

Fall Out Boy-My Songs Know What You Did In the Dark (Light 'Em Up)

Hysteria went global on the day that it was revealed that Fall Out Boy had reunited. I was part of this hysteria. To hear that any of your childhood favourites are reuniting, there isn't much better feelings. So, knowing that the Chicago band's pop-punk sound had passed its expiration date, it was interesting to see what they had matured to. Although their upcoming album Save Rock and Roll may have a laughable title, their new single is a lot more rock and roll. Comeback song My Songs Know What You Did in the Dark (Light 'Em Up) sounds so full of rage, so raw and is likable to most. The chorus finishes with a huge shriek from frontman Patrick Stump, showing he has far from lost his voice. Who knows what their new album will sound like, but this is enjoyable.

Ms Mr-Fantasy

I like pop. But before any guitar lovers or hipsters hit me with their "sell-out" rants, I like pop because of bands like these guys. American duo Ms Mr maybe the new breed of chilled pop and they sound great in their new single Fantasy. It sound frantic, but also so chilled as if it has been bred with Florence + The Machine with a blend of synth. Everybody is raving about these two and I am one to join that bandwagon as they are definitely ones to watch for the future.

Jake Bugg-Seen It All

Acid-tongued teenager Jake Bugg has released yet another single from his eponymous debut album; and it's easy to see why he continues to slate boy bands and take the piss out of a "farmers" folk band. His new track Seen It All is stripped-back as usual. Unfortunately it doesn't vary much from the rest of the album. The song - if you have not figured it out for yourself - basically tells the story of a day in Clifton and Bugg shows that he isn't just a talented lyricist - he's a talented storyteller. This might not do much for you, you might already be sick of the boy, but he knows how to keep it simple and sweet.

I would also like to apologise for the lack of updating due to "education commitments".

Miles Kane-Give Up

This is a sneak preview of what we would expect off of mod-star Miles Kane's upcoming album which will be released this year - and from what I've heard from his new single, it's going to be a cracking LP. The new track is titled Give Up and after a slightly timid first album, Kane seems to have come out of his shell more as a solo artist. He seems to come across as bratty and with a carefree attitude that screams "I don't give a fuck". A less refined, more rough around the edges style suits Kane a lot better and not even a cringey music video can ruin this song. He definitely suits this kind of music, we'll just have to wait and see if the rest of the album is as good as this.

Rating: 9/10

Example-Perfect Replacement

He is back yet again with another song to get fans buzzing. Rapper Example continues through his fourth album The Evolution of Man with his new single Perfect Replacement. Yes, he knows how to make a fine party tune, but recently his music has taken a turn for the worse. His recent album is full of similar tracks which follow the recipe of a big dance chorus and it is incredibly boring dross now. You will love this for maybe one or two listens, then you will get sick of it.

Dido-No Freedom

Where has she been? One minute she was collaborating with rapper Eminem back over a decade ago; and now, she is one of the stars on the scrap heap. Although singles such as White Flag and Thank You are way in the past, she seems to continue her traditional chilled-love songs in her new single No Freedom. She sounds a little more country here than usual, but she sticks to the task in where her voice shines through beautifully. However, with no hooks or real catch to this song, I'm surprised it was released as a single as it is a pretty lethargic track - and I'm sure she has better ones than this on her upcoming album Girl Who Got Away. If she doesn't, then her album could really struggle.
