LIVE: Peace

They stroll on stage which despite their laid-back antics, still receive a massive roar and humbly take their places before belting out their opener Delicious in a packed venue at underground club The Arches.

On their April UK Tour, new boys Peace traveled to Glasgow. A place know, almost surfn for its great crowd atmosphere, but also, its unforgiveness for those who slip up. So, to impress their loyal fans and to win new ones, the Birmingham quartet had to play their hearts out tonight. But before they entertained the fans, they're support act had to play.

Superfood have been on the music radar for around six months now and hail from the same town as their fellow headliners. Their B-Town sound is not like the other bands who hail from there. Their music consists of scuzzy rock as well as a chilled sound. They humbly walk on, smash through their first song before quietly only saying "We're Superfood". They proceed with four or five more songs including TV and Superfood with the latter sounding like a cooler version of Weezer's "Island In the Sun". Despite the odd jeer from the odd moron, they play a solid and confident set, even if it did not look comfortable.

Fans go crazy as they hope to get their tenner's worth as the psych rockers take to the stage. The band waste no time in starting their set as they play deep track Delicious with its sulky bass lines and its dark theme, as frontman Harry Koisser moans "You used to be delicious". The pace picks up when grungy number Follow Baby and pop-rock track Lovesick play after a difficult start due to technical difficulties. Once everything is tweaked and sorted, the crowd start to react better to the band on Waste of Paint as the atmosphere grows wild as they scream "You're electric honey you blow my brains" completed with some addictive hooks. Things slow down again as they play Float Forever before Koisser asks the crowd "Who here is high tonight?". Something that is met with screams and sighs as the crowd are split even on the matter. The question is appropriate as they play Higher Than the Sun, the opener to their album, In Love. Then the fan favourites kick in. Toxic is full of crooning riffs and Wraith is a sultry song, sounding almost sleazy but great. 1998 is not as familiar to all - due to it not appearing on the album - and therefore leaves the main set a little disappointing to end on. Nevertheless, the length of the song is incredible and they don't lose form when playing.

The encore starts and the band expectantly walk back out to the crowd's delight. California Daze sends everyone into a dreamy state with its swooning hooks and lazy drum beat as Harry's brother and guitarist for the band, Sam Koisser joins in on backing vocals. After that, they end with their breakthrough single Bloodshake from their EP Delicious. This receives one of the best cheers of the night as Koisser wails "We spit blood at the sun/spit blood in the ocean" and the band end on a high.

I have seen quite a few bands, but not many of them have the presence of Peace. Their music is different, they are a fun bunch of lads and they are tipped to do great things. Just what is needed in a great band, and after tonight's show, they have shown that they can do that.

Best Moment: The surprisingly good version of Waste of Paint, sounding so much better live.

Worst Moment: The stuttering start because the mics weren't working.

ALBUM: Peace-In Love

2013 has became the year of psychedelic music and as a genre emerges, there is always a new wave of future bands. When it come to psychedelic, B-Town's pysch-rockers and acid-lovers Peace lead the way after being one of the biggest buzz bands of last year. So, with such hype placed on the band after their EP Delicious, a debut album had high expectations. With fellow 2012 hype band Palma Violets disappointed a few with their debut album after so much talk, Peace were in danger of doing this. Luckily, the debut In Love has failed to disappoint. The quartet from Birmingham decided to make an album about love - something that is a generic theme when creating an album, but  it works. A mixture of upbeat pop tracks and shoegazing slow tunes are enough to see this album as potentially one of the best of the year. In Love starts with bright opener Higher Than the Sun which is then followed by grungy single and fan favourite Follow Baby which is one of the better tracks. To look at the album as an overall, every song is about love, but some celebrating it and some exploiting the faults in it. The likes of Lovesick give it a positive look with frontman Harry Koisser crying "I don't wanna go to school.../...I just want to be a fool and get lovesick with you" before delving into slow, swaying song Float Forever. As the first four tracks on the album are positive, the album starts to become darker and hateful. The flaws of love are revealed as Koisser starts to realise that his story soon turns from a romance to having a distaste for it. Wraith is the turning point where it almost seems like despite the love shown "You can be my ice age sugar", Koisser starts to see the worst in this girl "I don't wanna see you". Followed by a moody Delicious which possesses just as many great riffs as follow-up song Waste of Paint is one of the highlights of the album with a massive chorus. Toxic is a bit of enjoyable indie rock which is a pretty gloomy song despite its upbeat sound as Koisser screams "all I gotta do is forget you" as he deals with getting over an ex. A beautiful end to the album concludes with California Daze which like Float Forever, is a slow number but with added hooks and some great backing vocals from Harry's brother, Sam. All in all, Peace have hardly put a foot wrong with In Love and have produced one of the best British debut albums of the past five years.

Nina Nesbitt-Stay Out

Are any of you missing Amy MacDonald and need some other female solo artist with a guitar to fill her place? Well, look no further than fellow Scot folk singer Nina Nesbitt. The Edinburgh girl has really emerged in the last year as she is one of Scotland's latest musical prospects. Her new single Stay Out has become a favourite with fans, both loyal and neutral. Nesbitt hits out at rock wannabes "He's got the  Rolling Stones tee, but he only knows one song" and young people dismissing modern music "They think they're from the sixties, but they were born in 1991" giving her a strange bratty attitude in contrast with the innocence of her music. However, this is not a bad thing. This little twist in this song turns this from a generic folk song, to a lovely piece of music with great lyrics. Watch out for this girl.

(Yet again apologies for lack of updates. Blogger wasn't working and I have struggled to juggle education with this)

Ben Howard-Keep Your Head Up

It feels like a lifetime since Ben Howard emerged as a singer-songwriter, but the singer has only just grabbed awards at the start of the year at this year's BRIT Awards after picking up two awards. His single Keep Your Head Up is out this week and gives Howard more of a rock sound, if you can call it that, compared to his usual work. It has a fast tempo; great vocals behind it; and if you can't wait until the summer, is a fantastic song to get you in the mood. It seems a little copycat of other folk artists such as Florence + The Machine and Mumford and Sons, but everyone sounds like someone these days. Decent effort from the Devon lad.

The Killers-Flesh and Bone

Las Vegas band The Killers have been pretty low-key since the release of their last album Battle Born with no real buzz about the band and they have fallen from the limelight. However, they continue to release singles humbly and the new single Flesh and Bone doesn't disappoint. This is one of the highlights of the album with its scratchy riffs and raw sound. It sounds at home with the rest of the album, yet detects hints of previous Killers hits like Human and For Reasons Unknown. The synth keyboard is a great addition to a typical Killers' song and the usual vocals from Brandon Flowers ensure it is unique. He shouts "And I'm running out of tiimee" in one of The Killers' most anthemic songs. This is definitely one to watch live and the quartet know that.

Biffy Clyro-Biblical

When Simon Neil isn't pushing people in swimming pools, kicking over water fountains and punching car windows, he fronts Scottish band Biffy Clyro and from their double album Opposites is their new single Biblical. It has a proper rock sound to it, but yet doesn't sound rough or hard to listen to. This is no Jesus-loving song, but it has an element of wonder and awe to it. The verses are cooled-down and like many songs on this album are stripped back to minimal instruments. A guitar riff is only supported by a drum beat and Neil's vocals, sounding as great as ever: "Baby if you could would you go back to the start?". The chorus is big and manic, completely opposite (no pun intended) from the verses. The track finishes with a huge choir and then like the start (again no pun) it's tranquil and fades out, leaving the listeners surely as amazed as I am. One of the best off of the album.

Haim-Falling

If you are sitting in your house in desperate need of some Sunday relaxation, sister trio Haim should be able to sort you out. They have already wowed music journalists with their pop/R'n'B sound from previous singles like Don't Save Me and Forever, but a couple of songs does not determine the quality of a band. So Este, Danielle and Alana have released their third single Falling which is the ultimate chilled song. The echo of the three shouting "Now I'm falling" over the sedated vocals of Este Haim. The bass is low and slow and the music as usual, is really enjoyable. So, not only is everyone really excited about their debut album (which still doesn't have a release date, annoyingly), but this shows just how capable they are of having an incredible album and to show people they won't be one hit wonders of the indie scene.

Tyler, the Creator-Domo 23

It's exciting to think that the eccentric, dark and hilarious rapper Tyler, the Creator has a new album out this week. He has already gave us a sneak preview of his upcoming album Wolf with his single Domo 23 which is released this week. This may not have anything on Yonkers as its chorus (if you have call it that) is a loop saying "Fuck that, golf wang" and has no emotional message, however it's fun and humorous. Tyler names fellow Odd Future members Jasper Dolphin and Taco as well as David Beckham and dissing One Direction. Some of his lyrics are quite close to the bone "Shit's going down like Rodney King's swimming lessons" whilst some he brags about being productive compared to those he grew up with "While y'all rolling doobies/I be in my bedroom scoring movies". But overall, Tyler spits through this record and takes hits at people who call him homophobic as he hits the sensitive areas as well. Not his best work, but is definitely creditable and fun.
