I have been quite skeptical of folkies Mumford and Sons. After loving their debut album Sigh No More and completely changing the face of folk, I couldn't get enough of them. Then Sigh No More 2.0 came out, which is also known as Babel and I was unimpressed in the lack of originality of the album with only a few songs standing out. One of these is their new single Hopeless Wanderer. The tempo is like a rollercoaster and although near the end it has its classic Mumford banjo solo, there's something nice about this track that reminds you of that debut album. If you love the song, you will wet yourself watching the video which stars the likes of Ed Helms and Jason Sudeikis as the band members in comical roles. But anyway back to the song, Mumford may have struggled critically with the new album, but there's one thing that is certain - they know what are their best songs - and they are the singles that they release.

Fall Out Boy-Alone Together
I have always been a lover of Fall Out Boy, mainly because I was a young teenager who didn't fit in greatly and these guys were my answer. Even though I love them, I used to call them my guilty pleasure. This was until they made a comeback with their bold album name Save Rock and Roll and although they haven't done this exactly, they have done alright. They release their third single Alone Together which isn't as impressive as the other two singles, but nonetheless gets the job done. It's more throwaway than treasure, but there's no denying that there is a lot of energy into this song. The great thing is that I feel Fall Out Boy have earned respect in making more likable music, but have not dropped in quality. Not a memorable single, but it is still fun.

Miles Kane-Taking Over
2012 was a bit of a breakthrough year for Miles Kane. Even after appearing on that Last of the Shadow Puppets album with Alex Turner and releasing a debut solo album, he was only a sweetheart to many indie kids. However, his second album Don't Forget Who You Are is harder and not as innocent and naive as the first. The tunes have also matured in quality. Compare his new single Taking Over to Don't Forget Who You Are and Give Up and you have something else. Slower pace, not as much noise, but honestly, the track is just the best single on the album. Less is more in this situation and Kane has a real matured sound, with this song in particular, sounding like it could be an indie-rock classic. The man from The Wirral can only go up from here.

Arctic Monkeys-Why'd You Only Call Me When You're High?
A lot of people have been ecstatic with the return of Sheffield's finest (sorry Pulp!) Arctic Monkeys - and they should be. The new album AM looks prosperous with all new fields being visited as the quartet continue to mix genres. After their single Do I Wanna Know? they release their second single Why'd You Only Call Me When You're High? For your typical Monkeys fan who praises I Bet You Look Good On the Dancefloor and state that they became "shit" when Humbug was released, they might as well leave now because Why'd You Only Call Me...is something different. Alex Turner sings in falsetto over some funky beats as Matt Helders contributes with his high pitch. It is a rock song that has been successfully fused with hip-hop to create something really really cool. The song isn't difficult to interpret as the title is a huge give away: Turner keeps calling/texting a girl who he's having bad relations with, but only when he is high or drunk. Simple lyrics, yet totally effective with genius, laidback instruments. Personally, I cannot wait for the new album.
