50 Love Is A Laserquest
This is a track from the band's fourth album "Suck It And See" which can sound too similar to other tracks and slips into anonymity. Still a great love ballad.
49 Dance Little Liar
With its riffs and gloom, this is a hit with many fans who like that dark side to the band, taken from the band's third album "Humbug".48 Perhaps Vampires Is A Bit Strong But...
Taken from that memorable debut album "Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not". Loses some brownie points and is my least favourite track from the album due to its messy sound. Still, not exactly a bad track.47 That's When You're Wrong
The final song on the fourth album "Suck It And See" and it is quite a content number to finish a very LA-influenced album on.
46 Riot Van
Although the lyrics are pretty cool and very teenage-friendly, there's something lacking in this acoustic song that some of the band's other slow songs possess. Taken from "Whatever People Say I Am..."
45 D Is For Dangerous
A very shouty third track from the second album "Favourite Worst Nightmare". 10/10 for energy and vocals from drummer Matt Helders, however it's not a stand-out on the album.
44 The Jeweller's Hands
This ends the third album "Humbug" and is a very stand-out song for its psychedelic influences, however, the band haven't mastered the psych sound on this track.
43 Balaclava
Balaclava is some massive fun, but again quite messy like "Perhaps Vampires...". The highlight from this "Favourite Worst Nightmare" track is that cool drum solo beat near the end.
42 Brick By Brick
Probably the poorest lyrics from the band and the poorest single (but all the singles are pretty brilliant), yet this is great to watch live and is great fun. Quite a similar song to "D Is For Dangerous" and is taken from "Suck It And See"
41 Secret Door
This is a lovely track taken from "Humbug". Alex Turner croons "Fools on parade" like an absolute romantic.
40 The Hellcat Spangled Shalalala
Strange title name, but such a smooth, sedated song from "Suck It And See". There's not enough in this song to call it a great, just more like very good throwaway.
39 Reckless Serenade
With no real structure, this song can't be near the top 20, but that sort-of-chorus is very catchy and beautiful so it's not all bad.
38 Only Ones Who Knows
The intro is swooning and dreamy and is the second album's only real slow song, which makes it a nice change, but the instruments sometimes swamp the vocals.
37 Piledriver Waltz
The lyrics are nothing but brilliant on here: "You look like you've been for breakfast at the heartbreak hotel". Just lacks addiction.
36 Red Light Indicates Doors Are Secured
More about nights out on this track from their debut album. A lot neater than "Perhaps Vampires..." but is quite plain.
35 Potion Approaching
Potion Approaching starts with a total brilliant riff from Jamie Cook and then thrashing drums from Helders. Again quite like "Only Ones Who Knew", it's swamped by instruments. However, it is addictive.
34 Leave Before The Lights Come On
Some people will be fuming that this is so far down the order, but I have a reason. Although the verses are brilliant, the chorus is a bit of an anti-climax and that bridge lacks anything creative or exciting. The only thing that brings this back up is the thrashing at the end with guitars and drums.
33 The View From The Afternoon
Another one which is controversially low down. Pretty much the same explanation as the last song. There is something there that isn't lyrically clever and relies heavily on instruments.
32 Old Yellow Bricks
That intro is hard to forget and the comparisons to The Wizard of Oz somehow work, the lyrics are smart and witty, something isn't there however on this song.
31 Fake Tales Of San Francisco
Another fan favourite here which doesn't get played too much live - and I can see why. Sure, fans love it. Why wouldn't they? It has lyrics of hitting out at phony rock stars and during the verses, the guitar is memorable, however, like many songs on the debut album, it relies on instruments to bring the song to life.
30 All My Own Stunts
That intro and ending along with the moody, but amazing way that Turner sings "Allll my owwnnn stuuuuntss" is enough to squeeze this song inside the top 30.
29 Pretty Visitors
The organ intro sets the dark scene for this "Humbug" track. The chorus is incredible live as it's a right good sing-a-long.
28 Black Treacle
A lot of killer riffs on this track. With a great bridge, which tends to be a song's weak point as well as a cool chorus, it deserves to be top 30.
27 You Probably Couldn't See For The Lights But You Were Staring Straight At Me
That sentence of a title is very catchy and the beat is even more so. One of the more fun tracks on "Whatever People Say I Am..".
26 This House Is A Circus
This House Is A Circus is one of the tracks on "Favourite Worst Nightmare" that is really quick, but works. The chorus is big and picks up to the band singing together.
25 Evil Twin
This single (from no album by the way) was brought out around the same time as heavy track R U Mine? and focuses on screeching guitars and a decent chorus. It's fun and really showed what direction Monkeys were going in.
24 Still Take You Home
This track is about Turner thinking some girl is pretty ugly (can't see through your fake tan) but she will do. Just like this this track - not the best, but you'll still listen to it happily.
23 A Certain Romance
I have never been a huge fan of this track, even though I want to be. However, that high note played at the start is one of Arctic Monkeys' best moments and so sits respectively at 23.
22 Dangerous Animals
Although to many this song seems too messy, I can't help but think it works. This is one of the best off of that marmite album "Humbug".
21 From The Ritz To The Rubble
This is where it starts to get difficult. I put this song just outside the top 20 because of of the chorus - nothing really wrong about it, but compared to other songs, there's some room for improvement.
20 Library Pictures
This is a strange song from the fourth album "Suck It And See" as the track is very "first or second album-sounding" with its fast pace and monstrous guitars.
19 When The Sun Goes Down
Another tune that I have never really got is this. I think it's still a great song, especially live, but there's so many songs that are underrated compared to this smash hit.
18 Teddy Picker
That opening riff as well as the guitar solo is something else. Although a basic song, they perfect it to make it swagger a bit.
17 The Bad Thing
From listening to Arctic Monkeys, no one talks about this cracking tune. The Bad Thing hides away in the late tracks of "Favourite Worst Nightmare" and has the cool sound of Miles Kane mixed with something very 60's swing.
16 My Propeller
This is the opener to "Humbug". Something very trippy and moody and swinging and brilliant. A song that you can listen to in any mood really. With its darker, lower guitar riffs, it paved a new direction for Arctic Monkeys.
15 Do Me A Favour
Considered one of the best songs never to be released by the band, Do Me A Favour is a crowd pleaser at concerts and mixes between arm-swaying and mosh-pitting.
14 Why'd You Only Call Me When You're High?
Awaiting release on the new album "AM", it mixes hip-hop beats with classic rock. Nick O'Malley and Matt Helders help out Turner on vocals as well. Not only a brilliant title name, but a song that again showed what Arctic Monkeys could do.
13 Suck It And See
From the eponymous album, this is one cool piece of American rock, with Turner soothing his words to a song with great guitar sounds.
12 Don't Sit Down 'Cause I've Moved Your Chair
It has to include the most baffling lyrics, but this song has everything: guitar screeching, falsettos, a heavy chorus and a fairly quiet use in choruses. Yass.
11 Fluorescent Adolescent
One of the most famous songs from the band and if you don't know it, you'll hear it on The Inbetweeners all the time. This song shouldn't work, but it has became a classic and is such a unique song.
10 She's Thunderstorms
This is a ballad that can only be beaten by a couple of others. A song that is so loving that if you hate the lyrics, you have no soul. The chorus comes around with a thrash and then settles again wonderfully. You can't help but love a love song.
9 I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor
"Don't believe the hype" was the first words muttered by Turner before he thrashed into what would become the band's first single and breakthrough track. Despite being overrated, it is still an absolute tune. The fact that a song like this can come on in a club and have everyone go more mental than the latest dance tune, you know that it has something magical about it.
8 Brianstorm
The drums are insane on this song, which can only be described as a fast-paced disco anthem which has so many brilliant moments in it. Whether it be the smacking of the drums whilst the other members of the band shout "Top marks for not trying" or that crazy intro which has to go down as the best one they have ever done, you can't help but love this.
7 Dancing Shoes
"GET ON YER DANCING SHOOS" starts off two and a half minutes of top-notch energy from the Sheffield lads as they not only bring out a fun side to them, they also bring about a sex-fueled side for the first time. One of their best quick songs.
6 Do I Wanna Know?
Turner sounds sleek on his new single from the new album, and no wonder. He sings about women constantly now and with a cool swagger he croons his way through Do I Wanna Know? whilst pelvic thrusting to the beat and singing "Crawling back to you..."
5 Mardy Bum
"Remember cuddles in the kitchen yeah? To get things off the ground" is one of the sweetest lyrics to have ever blessed my ears. Why does this non-single have over 9 million views on YouTube? Because so many people love it and so do they - it's still regularly in their set lists.
4 R U Mine?
This is the heaviest song that Monkeys have done to date and it's just mind-blowing. The guitar solos as well as them killer riffs are superb. Helders is present again with his falsettos and that guitar solo near the end is wonderful. Right from "I'm a puppet on a string" to that last riff, you know you haven't wasted a second listening to it.
3 505
505 starts with a very gloomy, organ-filled first minute and the song slowly picks up until in the last minute and a half, it just goes mental and the crowd absolutely love it. Probably the best thing about this "Favourite Worst Nightmare" end track is the appearance of Miles Kane who turns up a lot live to play with the band. Everyone loses their shit to this song and chaos occurs - and no wonder. This song has such a great effect over people and should be up in everyone's list of favourite Monkeys songs.
2 Crying Lightning
The bass at the start of this track creates a very gloomy, stormy (pardon the pun) theme to which Turner throws emotion and energy around wildly. The song picks up to a great climax and doesn't disappoint. The bridge is perfect as well, infact, there isn't much wrong with this song at all, except it's not Number 1....
1 Cornerstone
Although some will argue that Mardy Bum is the best Arctic Monkeys' ballad of all time, I have went with Cornerstone. That whirring guitar noise starts off 3 minutes of sheer romance and passion rolled into a song. It's a track full of beautiful lyrics: "I wandered over for a closer look, and kissed whoever was sitting there", "Tell me where's your hiding place?" among others. The instruments are amazing, the vocals are as best as you can get from Alex Turner and for a band who had just came off two fast-paced albums, this was a masterpiece to create such a perfect ballad.
