Crystal Castles-Sad Eyes

Trance music has never sounded so well. Usually this type of music would be classed as a nightclub banger (and a bad one at that), but Crystal Castles work it to their advantage. Instead of some moron bellowing some half-arsed written lyrics down a mic, lead singer Alice Glass makes their new single Sad Eyes sound quite harmonious, despite the fact that this is far from a relaxing track. Making euphoric tracks sound like this isn't easy; and I would have to say well done to the two of them for making such a well-produced track, showing just how well done their third album actually was.

Awolnation-Kill Your Heroes

They always say "never meet your heroes", but I have never heard of anyone talking about murdering them - except from rock band Awolnation. They release their third single Kill Your Heroes from their debut album Megalithic Symphony. It took them a while to get a record deal (when I say a while, I mean over a decade) and it is hard to see why. There has been a great hype about the likes of Imagine Dragons, and with a similar electro-rock sound, it's hard to see how the likes of this happy, alternative song can't be successful. It's even backed with a cool keyboard sound to add to the niceness of this song. With the band name and song title I was certainly ready for a riot band, but I was tricked. At least now I know not to judge a book by its cover.

Bastille-Pompeii

People are loving Bastille, and why not? The band have been around with great singles like Flaws and Bad Blood which have made them where they are today, but I cannot for the life of me like their new single Pompeii. It almost seems underwhelming after what I've heard of them so far. I find it almost bizarre that others have found this to be their best single and I apologise to anyone who loves this track, but it doesn't do it for me. Obviously sticking with the theme of volcanoes with that great intro worked, but the rest of the song was a little boring for me. It's a shame, because I really love Bastille.

A$AP Rocky feat. Skrillex and Birdy Nam Nam-Wild For the Night

Breakthrough rapper A$AP Rocky has managed to have a great 2012 and 2013, after the release of his album Long Live A$AP, he has managed success with his single Fuckin' Problems. On the follow-up to that, he has decided to release his new single Wild For the Night which features "the hottest DJ" on the block Skrillex. The song has potential as it starts with the deep voice to a cool beat; and even after this when it hits the verse, the song could still salvage something from this. When it hits the chorus, you can't help but be a little disappointed. It turns into just about any Skrillex song as it meets the criteria and is no longer anything special. It will go down well on clubber's holidays, but not that well in the music industry.

Theme Park-Tonight

Some of you may remember me reviewing Theme Park way back in the late summer with their song Jamaica, so it's nice to see a slightly different song for their new single which is called Tonight. On this track, the band speed it up, talk about getting high, and ultimately make this song sound from another planet. So a space-themed song from the mellow band is well greeted. They've changed their sound slightly which depending on your opinion, is either better or not. I like it, but I don't think it sounds as great as Jamaica. Valiant effort nonetheless.

Tyler James feat. Kano-Worry About You

Right, I heard this guy on rival-to-The-X-Factor show The Voice and I was a little disappointed that he won. Mainly, because he was a little underwhelming. So, to see The Voice winner Tyler James release his new single Worry About You (which features London rapper Kano) was something I was not looking forward to. As many of you who keep up-to-date with my blog, you will know by now that my pet hate is London rappers. Kano does not break this streak (only Plan B can get away with it) as he sounds embarrassing on this track; and as much as you can enjoy Tyler's falsetto, the music itself is boring and unremarkable.

San Cisco-Wild Things

There's something very cute and innocent about San Cisco's music. The Australians (yeah I thought they were from California too) release their new single Wild Things this week, and it is making this week's music even more summery than it already was. The indie-pop group (who have drawn comparison to the likes of Passion Pit) have managed to build a strong and near-perfect chorus; around some below-par verses. Regardless of the verses, Wild Things is lovely and cool at the same time; and with a hint of folk and a hit of electro, this track has it all - apart from perfection.

Train-Mermaid

Have Train forgot what season it is? However, there is nothing better than hearing a summery song as the weather starts to get gradually better, so I was happy to hear the band's new song Mermaid. Their music may not be brilliant anymore, but they certainly know how to make a tune. The single is cool with the use of acoustic guitars; and manages to make it enjoyable for people who adore chart music making it a bit of an all-rounder. Train may be past their prime these days, but they are more popular than ever when they release music like this.

Two Door Cinema Club-Next Year

Some say that Two Door Cinema Club have failed to live up to the expectations of their first album Tourist History with their follow-up album Beacon, but new single Next Year shows that their new, slightly electro sound works. The song is a typical Two Door song: fast, full of guitar riffs and backed up by front man Alex Trimble's vocals. As much as this might be your bang average indie song, it possesses some moments of true quality. Like previous single Sun, the band have added a fantastic guitar riff (heard about 1 minute into the song) which swoons and makes the song that little better. The song overall sounds like it has been dipped in some Simian Mobile Disco and still managed to keep its original sound. A fairly good effort from the Northern Irish boys.

One Direction-One Way or Another

Yeah, this is exactly what you think it is if you haven't heard it. Blondie fans and lovers of The Undertones, turn away now because your favourite group that you love to hate, One Direction, have managed to murder not one, but two classic rock songs. Their Comic Relief version of One Way or Another brings a tear to my eye - and not the good kind. It has tried to stay rock, but manages to turn into a pop song, something that shouldn't be done with classic rock. To add to this atrocity, a bridge is added in as the quintet band sing Teenage Kicks in unison in what seems like a pointless addition to the song. Please someone take this song out the back and put it out of its misery.

Kate Nash-3AM

My 250th post goes out to a lady that we haven't heard a great deal from since her cheeky, sarcastic, mouthy debut single Foundations. Yes, it is London singer Kate Nash. She seems to have got rid of her funny lyrics and crazy persona in her rapid new track 3AM. She races through this track so much that it seems to lose control, but she manages to get back on track without any bumps or bruises. It may be different, but she is far from losing confidence and although she isn't as popular as before, she is definitely still making good music.

Andy Grammer-Keep Your Head Up

I was pleasantly surprised to see Andy Grammer wasn't an old man, but was infact an upbeat young man from LA who is as incredibly laid back as his music. His debut single Keep Your Head Up has a nice pop rock sound and should mentally prepare people for the summer, or just annoy the impatient people. It isn't the definition of fantastic music, but it is nice to hear this music now and again. He managed number 53 on the US Billboards with this hit, it will be interesting to see if he can do the same over here in the UK

Alicia Keys-Brand New Me

She may make her fair share of ballads, but she knows how to write them. Famous pianist and singer Alicia Keys seems to reveal a new side to her in her new single Brand New Me. It may ooze passion, but unfortunately Keys hasn't found a brand new kind of music. Sure, this is a lovely song and she perfects it, but what else can you do but yawn slightly? This sounds better than Girl On Fire, but there's nothing awesome about this. Definitely organic music and better than most mainstream songs, but is that enough?

Tegan and Sara-Closer

It's hard to think that twin band Tegan and Sara have been going for almost 20 years, but the Canadian sisters are still going strong. They have opted for a synthpop number in their new single Closer. Some may argue this is not the band's best work, but there is something really fun about this track. It's ditsy bubblegum pop, but damn is it catchy. The lyrics are planted in your mind, the electronic sound is hypnotising, the song itself is addictive. Might not be a work of art, but you will enjoy these girls if you like carefree dance-pop hits.

Shiny Toy Guns-Waiting Alone

Right, I'm undecided about alternative-rock band Shiny Toy Guns. There's something there, but I cannot for the life of me see what it is. Their new synth-rock track Waiting Alone is almost a pop song with its sound. Their image is a surprise as their music does not reflect it, yet the new single is (again) average, but it is a very happy song. Some of it is not surprisingly underwhelming and boring sending me into a fit of yawns; but it's a decent effort from the Americans.

Lower Than Atlantis-Go On Strike

I've already reviewed Lower Than Atlantis before, and I'm disappointed that they have kept the same sound. As I've said before, they sound a lot like Fall Out Boy, which again is annoying. Just for the fact that their accents don't sound like they go with the music. Their new song Go On Strike may have a stronger message than previous tracks, but it's the same, fast pop-punk that has been done a million times before. At the first listen I also struggled to identify the start of the chorus, showing the structure of the song was a little below average. This has continued a week in music which - with the odd exception - has bored me to tears.

Gabrielle Aplin-Please Don't Say You Love Me

She's a beautiful woman, who makes beautiful music, but it's sometimes a bit dreary. Her music is peaceful and her voice is fantastic, but how much of the same stuff can you take? English singer-songwriter Gabrielle Aplin has released her follow-up to her number 1 single The Power of Love with her new track Please Don't Say You Love Me. For fans of Aplin, it's great, but for neutral fans, it might seem too much like her debut single. It (like many songs this week) is average as it fails to excite me, yet I cannot dislike this. Great song to listen to on Valentine's Day - if you like - but it doesn't make the imagination run wild.

Drowning Pool-One Finger and a Fist

Ok, don't get me started on the possible euphemisms in the song title...However, Texas metal band Drowning Pool release their new single One Finger and a Fist as part of their fifth studio album. Now this song faces it's own problems. The music isn't consistent, mainly because they have had four different frontmen (one sadly died and the other two left) and they haven't had an incredible song since their debut single Bodies, with most since being average. This continues with the new single as they try a little too hard to succeed. It is pretty much standard metal music, so nothing new, but not anything too bad.

Drake-Started From the Bottom

He has grew on recently I have to admit, so R&B star Drake was out to impress me (yes he knew I would be reviewing this, somehow) with his new single Started From the Bottom. Again, the song is enjoyable and it doesn't have to rely on predictable beats or autotune, but it almost seems like Drake goes out to do the bare minimum. Started From the Bottom has a laid-back sound, but is repetitive. Maybe, a little too repetitive. As I said, you can enjoy this song and sing along to it, but it's only borderline fun, being precariously close to shit. He's managed to make it a good song nonetheless, but I just want to see more effort from him, rather than his "Swag" attitude.

Deadmau5 & Wolfgang Gartner-Channel 42

There's the rare occasion when you do not need lyrics for a great song. As referred to a couple of reviews ago, Avicii-Levels is one of them. However, Deadmau5 seems to be the King of sound, showing that vocals aren't always necessary in music. His newest piece with Wolfgang Gartner may not be his best work, but their new song Channel 42 - putting a message across in the title about Animal Rights - has a cool disco sound to it, as well as maintaining a trance theme to lure in party-goers. Deadmau5 has definitely cemented his spot as a modern day Mozart as with no lyrics, he can still make wonders with his set.

Charli XCX-You (Ha Ha Ha)

Right, I don't like saying bad things about artists because all music is good in it's own way - yes even Nicki Minaj - but Charli XCX sometimes gives me a headache with her new confusing single You (Ha Ha Ha). To sum it up quickly, it's difficult to listen to the vocals and the lyrics when all you can hear in the background is her production crew strangling some stray cats. It's so off-putting that it feels like there is more than one song playing (like the way you have music wars in the house with your siblings). She could have improved this so much if she altered parts of this slightly. I mean, she even was dangerously close to sounding like Cher Lloyd for Christ's sake. This begs the question, is Charli XCX not mainstream pop because she likes to be a smaller artist, or is she just not good enough for the charts?

Avicii vs Nicky Romero-I Could Be the One

Avicii (aka Tim Bergling) is obviously best-known as the teenager who brought us the great party anthem Levels, but since then he has kept a low profile. He has since teamed up with fellow DJ Nicky Romero for their new song I Could Be the One. There seems to be a lot of my past creeping into this song and when I say that, I mean I haven't listened to tunes like this since I was like 10 years old. That may be a great nostalgic thing, but it also shows that this doesn't pass for much more than some happy hardcore, something that I grew out of years ago. A night out on a club crawl will make this an absolute tune, but you'll soon face the harsh reality when you are listening to this stone cold sober.

Anavae-Stormchaser

There's one thing that disappoints me recently, the rise in generic alternative rock bands. Some may argue "What about all the generic indie bands?". Well, at least they all sound different-ish. Unfortunately I cannot like London rockers Anavae. They are another band fronted by a woman, trying to be Paramore - and why? Their new single Stormchaser is nothing short of underwhelming, in what you expect to be a fast rock song by the title, turns into something rather boring. On paper this seems promising, but in reality, you can't help but give to let out a sigh.

A Fine Frenzy-Now Is the Start

Me like many have never heard of American singer-songwriter Alison Sudol (better known as pysch-pop singer A Fine Frenzy). However, just because an artist is unknown, doesn't mean they aren't great musicians which she proves in her new single Now Is the Start. It is some great dream-pop which will get  Feist and Bjork fans raving about this. The synths are perfectly placed, the voice suits the tune and she is one of not many doing this kind of material right now. Lovely to hear a new sound and A Fine Frenzy has shown just how talented she is.

Robots Don't Sleep-Little White Lies

Not quite sure what to think of wacky (not MGMT wacky, sort of really weird wacky) electronic band Robots Don't Sleep. There's a great sound there, but there's also a lot of tedious parts on their new single Little White Lies. The sound of the instruments give it quite a cool, electronic noise in the background and the verses could make this track sound a lot better, but the chorus which shouts "SALVATION" ruins the song and just makes it hard to listen to. Not a huge fan of this.

Pure Love-Beach of Diamonds

There's one thing that I enjoy less than listening to Robbie Williams, and that is listening to someone who sounds like Robbie Williams. Pure Love fall into this category. Their song Beach of Diamonds is pretty much terrible and not even a fake-rock riff can save this horror show. The uncreative lyrics "So dive in, dive in, come on, dive in"adds to the amusement of this song, but also shows how tragically it has failed. Frank Carter shows that sometimes old is better, with Pure Love being nothing more than a wannabe of The Enemy  with some pretty poor vocals as well. Bring back Gallows.

My Chemical Romance-Surrender the Night

My Chemical Romance have a big problem that they have failed to ever really shake off and no, it isn't Gerard Way's hair dye addiction. It is their inconsistency. They can release a completely enjoyable single (such as Welcome to the Black Parade, Teenagers and Na Na Na Na), but then just as easily, release something that is just garbage (S.I.N.G). Unfortunately, their new track Surrender the Night is boring and off-putting; a little bit like when Kings of Leon turned pop rock by accident. Although MCR fans will love this (as you would for your favourite band), rock-ballads do not suit the rockers and high-tempo songs are where they are probably best off.

Kristina Train- Lose You Tonight

There has been an increase in the number of female solo artists in recent years, especially in the soul area. So what makes New York girl Kristina Train any different from Jessie Ware or Lana Del Rey? Well, not too much. Her new single Lose You Tonight more than deserves to be on a love compilation CD, as it has the perfect ingredients for a decent romantic song, but then the similarities kick in. Although currently, there is no one that matches her style, she sounds too much like artists such as Celine Dion, which isn't all bad, it just means there is nothing new. Although this song is enjoyable, it has to be put as bland. Great talent but she still seems to be finding her niche market.

Don Broco-Fancy Dress

When I read that Don Broco had a new single, I expected a Hank Williams-sounding pensioner with a cowboy hat singing about some western romance. It's safe to say I nearly took a heart-attack listening to the first five seconds as I was completely surprised. This rock band are decent if judging them on their just-released track Fancy Dress. They may almost sound like one of them pop punk bands with the incredibly-annoying long names, but they also sound a little rough as well which doesn't make them entirely disposable. With a lot of "Woah Woah"s you can't help but dislike the singing, but secretly love them for their good work on the guitars and drums for this record.

Bullet For My Valentine-Riot

A metal band with a song named Riot? I did not see that coming...However on a serious note, Bullet For My Valentine are back with another pulsating track. The buzz of the guitars races through like a train and the short chorus is sharp and pretty much a stadium song. The guitar solo is unnecessary, yet just incredibly quick with the guitarist having fingers like Satan. It's safe to say this song would be a complete riot to see live and although BFMV may not have the greatest lyrics on this record, they have created a bit of an anthem for themselves.

Booty Luv-Black Widow

Most people must think I have gone off on a tangent about women, however for those of you who remember who dance duo Booty Luv are, you'll remember their cheesy tunes like Shine and Some Kinda Rush, and they are still releasing music! They release new single Black Widow this week, with a name that doesn't suggest an anthemic atmosphere around this song and shows this with a darker verse than usual, but doesn't keep this the same throughout the song as it reverts back to its predictable sound. Pretty bad party tunes for people with a guilty pleasure towards them.

The Courteeners-Lose Control

One of the most hidden, yet best bands to come out of Manchester have returned with a new album ANNA, but The Courteeners certainly don't seem to be slowing down with their new single Lose Control. This may not have the energy of previous hits such as Acrylic, but it does not go off the path, which is sort of bad and good. Bad because fans want to hear something a little more unique, but good because they are good at what they know. It's pretty routine and the verses are very dark, but the chorus livens the record up a little and gives Liam Fray and the boys something to be content with.

When dance music is done right, it sounds great. Dubstep group Flux Pavillion have made a cracker of dance tune in the form of their new single Blow the Roof. The song may not be creative with the straightforward lyrics, but it certainly makes up for it with the incredibly addictive beat and the fact it will make you grind the nearest girl/guy with its empowering sound. Rarely do songs without meaning sound well, and this is one of the only exceptions.

Devlin feat. Diane Birch-Rewind

Most of the time I hear British rap, cringe is the first word to come into my head. Rapper Devlin shows what is so wrong with a lot of White Trash rap these days in his new song Rewind - which features a young lady called Diane Birch - is pretty much standard rapping about how love and life is tough and how he has to be more expressive of his feelings. Now incase you didn't realise, this song sounds incredibly familiar to Alyssa Reid's Alone Again, and has the same song structure as Eminem and Rihanna's fake-emotional song Love The Way You Lie. The day that rappers realise that moaning and putting people on the verge of cutting doesn't sound great, the better. He ain't no Plan B, so who is he? An artist that needs to work on his music, definitely.

Delphic-Baiya

They were previously known for being gloomy shoegazers who sung early 2010 electronic gem Doubt, Manchester band Delphic have been off the radar for a while now, but they have new songs, and a new sound. The same week they release their album Collections is the same week they release their refreshing new single, Baiya. Compared to their 2010 album, this a lot more different and a lot more fun. It keeps the same sound that Delphic is well-known for, but changes it from a transcending sound to a more cheerful and overall better sound. They pick up little parts that sound like Bombay Bicycle Club's most recent album stirred with the classic electronic sound. Baiya is probably one of the most clever pieces of music I've heard this year.
