2012 April-June

For the next three months there was a lot of build up. For students, exams were coming as well as the summer holidays, for sports, the season was starting/ending and in terms of the Olympics, it was only just beginning.

April

The Phone Hacking Scandal continued as Sky News admitted that they hacked phones of the public on two separate occasions. In world news, there were riots in Greece between protestors and police over the suicide of a 77 year-old pensioner outside of the parliament, and the Bahrain Grand Prix goes ahead despite huge protest following the death of a man. Social networking site Facebook purchased photo-sharing website Instagram for $1billion. Finally, sport was full of headlines. First, the 158th annual Boat Race was halted mid-race after a swimmer was in the river. Cambridge went on to win. Then came the Grand National where 33/1 favourite Neptune Collonges won, but it was overshadowed by the deaths of two horses - Synchronised (2011 winner) and According To Pete. Lastly, Rangers ex-owner Craig Whyte is banned for life of having any involvement in Scottish football, and the club are giving a 12 month transfer embargo.

May

May was mostly about politics and sport. The UK local elections occured as London's "eccentric" and Internet sensation Mayor Boris Johnson managed to stay in power for another term. Up north, SNP leader and Braveheart fanatic Alex Salmond launched his "Yes" campaign on Scottish Independence...outside a Cineworld in Edinburgh...Meanwhile Stateside, Mormon Mitt Romney was announced as the Republican candidate against President Barack Obama for the 2012 Presidential Election. This happened just weeks before the crazy story of the "Miami Cannibal" which had people thinking of a zombie apocalypse, when really it was a guy that had overdosed on PCP. Facebook popped up in the news again after offering shares of the company to the public for the first time, costing $37 a share. Sport started to wrap up in football, as Chelsea managed to win two cups in the one month. They defeated Liverpool in the FA Cup Final before defeating German champions Bayern Munich on penalties in the Champions League Final. West Ham secured their place in the Premier League next season with a 2-1 win over Blackpool in the play-off final, and Manchester City won the Premier League title in dramatic fashion, with an injury time winner coming from Sergio Aguero to stop rivals Manchester United from winning the title. Finally, there was sad news in music, with Adam Yauch of The Beastie Boys dying at the age of 47 from cancer.

June

June was a pretty strange month, full of random events happening around the world including Britains terrible weather which included terrible floods. First, former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak is sentenced to life in prison for killing demonstrators who were against his evil regime. Also in world news, Wikileaks editor Julian Assange is granted asylum in Ecuador after being under house arrest in the United Kingdom. June also created many patriots around the country with Queen Elizabeth II's Diamond Jubilee and the European Football Championships starting in Poland and Ukraine. The Olympics were soon coming and Saudi Arabia made history by letting women athletes compete for the first time, while amputee Oscar Pistorius failed to make the qualifying time for the regular Olympics, which would have made him the first amputee to compete. Rafael Nadal managed to get revenge on Novak Djokovic by defeating him in the French Open Final. It was sad days for Rangers fans as their club was officially liquidated, but they formed into a "newco". In music, singing sensation Adele announced that she was pregnant with her first child, and finally, a daredevil called Nick Wallenda shocked the world when he became the first person to ever tightrope across the Niagara Falls between USA and Canada.
