2012: October-December

The last 3 months of the year are usually full of festivities, and with only a week left, 2012 was pretty eventful.

October

October started with German legendary F1 driver Michael Schumacher announcing that he would retire at the end of the current season at the age of 41, while in football news, the fan who punched Sheffield Wednesday keeper Chris Kirkland is jailed. Also, in football news, Premier League referee Mark Clattenburg is found not guilty of racist remarks towards Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel. In music, one of the three members of Pussy Riot was released from prison as she hadn't started playing yet, whilst the other two are exiled to remote prisons in Russia. In other music news, The Stone Roses announce 2013 dates including a show in Glasgow Green where they will be supported by Primal Scream, The View and Jake Bugg. Then came Great British controversy. First of all, days after his death, ex-TV presenter and nation's favourite Jimmy Savile is faced with hundreds of allegations of child abuse and hundreds of jokes of him being a paedo. Then came an independent investigation into the Hillsborough Disaster of 1989 where it is revealed it could have been prevented by the police and Lancashire Police apologise to a blind man after an officer tasered him, mistaking his white cane for a samurai sword. Hurricane Sandy hits America and the surrounding islands, taking more than 100 lives in the states. In entertainment, Disney take over Lucasfilms for $4.07bn from George Lucas and proclaim that they will make three more Star Wars films. Finally, the world stopped and watched Red Bull's televised skydive from space from Austrian daredevil Felix Baumgartner who jumped to the music of a remixed version of Twin Atlantic's "Free".

Kimi Raikonnen managed to win his first race since returning to F1 this year at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, as later on the month, Red Bull Racing's Sebastian Vettel would capture his third consecutive World Championship in a dramatic Brazilian Grand Prix, narrowly beating Fernando Alonso. Also, Scottish side Celtic shocked Barcelona in the Champions League group stages, beating them 2-1 at Celtic Park. After the Olympics, Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt and American sprinter Allyson Felix win the IAAF World Athletes of the Year respectively. Man Utd's legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson (regarded as the best manager in history) has a bronze statue erected outside Old Trafford of the Scotsman. The UK attempt to make a minimum price per unit on alcohol of 45p to prevent binge drinking. December

The end of the year marks the end of a year full of surprises. For one, The Mayans were wrong about the world ending as a small minority of us continued thinking that it would actually end. Fools. Football superstar David Beckham said an emotional farewell to LA Galaxy when he played his last match for them as they won the MLS Cup against Houston Dynamo, while across the pond, William and Kate announced that they are expecting their first baby. However, tragedy struck when this news broke out. A nurse in the hospital where Kate was getting a scan, committed suicide after accidently disclosing details of where The Duchess of Cambridge was when two Australian DJ's prank called the hospital impersonating The Queen and Prince Charles. After Hurricane Sandy, musicians such as The Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton and Bruce Springsteen performed a benefit concert for the victims of the disaster, with days later Pope Benedict XVI sending his first ever tweet. Tour De France winner and Olympic Champion Bradley Wiggins won the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award ahead of Jessica Ennis and Andy Murray. Sadly, the year ended in a shooting massacre in Newton, Connecticut where 28 people (including 20 children, the killer and his mother) died in Sandy Hook Elementary School. Our thoughts go with their families. There is a week left in the year, and I hope nothing monumental happens because I would have missed it in this report. Roll on 2013.
