Taken 2

The original Taken film was in some ways one of the best action films of the past 5 years, but I was always uneasy about making a sequel to it. Unfortunately, Taken 2 was always going to have a tough time trying to outdo it's predecessor, and it failed to live up to my expectations.

The film is based on an Albanian family's revenge on Bryan Mills (Liam Neeson) after he killed his daughter's kidnapper (in reference to the first film). Their original plan is to kidnap him, but manages to kidnap his ex-wife Lenore (Famke Janssen) as well, as they try to rekindle their relationship in a family trip to Istanbul. Bryan has to partially rely on his daughter Kim (Maggie Grace) to save both her mother and father's lives.

The film is fun and really great if you haven't watched the first one, full of action and enough quick-moving cameras to make you go dizzy, as well as the film showing Bryan's clever side. There are parts of the film that are light-hearted and funny, but there are a few flaws in this film.

If you have watched the first one, you know what is going to happen. With the sequel low on fresh ideas, a lot of parts have been repeated and slightly tweaked so that the untrained eye doesn't notice them too much. The fact it was a 12A in the UK didn't help either. The first film was an 18 and full of violence and prostitution, yet they changed the sequel to aim at a younger crowd, in which doing that, lost a lot of action and made it difficult for a good storyline with half of the film made up of brainless car chases. Finally, the most annoying part of all was the ending. I won't give it away, but I'll warn you, it isn't like the Godfather or Scarface, it's incredibly disappointing and underwhelming. If they had ended on that scene, maybe I would have viewed this film in a different way, but it then ends on a cheesy family day out at a cafe for a couple of milkshakes. Eugh.

No doubt this film will make a ton as it is part of a franchise, but it has no original ideas and I might as well have watched the first one for an hour and a half.

Best Part: Probably the bit where his daughter is at the pool.

Rating: 4/10
